ブルースカイ麻雀は、インターネット上の楽しい小さな空間で、麻雀について語り合う場所です! | Bluesky Mahjong is a Fun Little Space On The Internet To Talk About Mahjong!

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!! It's Christmas Eve here right now. I hope everyone's Christmas is good. It was a miracle that a gift for my wife got here today, and i'm able to fix my van finally. Wooo! This year was basically about survival for me. Lets hope 2026 is a little more festive.

But one of the things I am a little festive about is I am just about to upgrade my mahjong feed on bluesky to a new server! (if you read this in 2026, it's already done). I really spend most of my time on this site, and on this community when it comes to being online. I want to write about it, to try and entice you to come take a look. Here's a link to the main feed.

What Is Bluesky?

Bluesky is a new social media website launched in 2021. It shares similarities to Mastodon, but is built on a new protocol called the ATProtocol. I don't really know toooooo much about that tech stuff, but I do know that it's the most comfy place for me to post online right now. It's a healthy balance of artists, -real- news, science, and pro wrestling community, outside of the FGC and mahjong communities that I try to help grow! Bluesky is not a website where the goal is to "win" by acquiring maximum followers. It's a spot where I imagine the average age of poster is over 30. The crowd that i've followed on my bluesky reminds me a lot of an internet that existed in the message board and IRC chat age.  One of the big sticking points is that there is really no official algorithm to juice engagement. Instead, Bluesky allows you to plug in your own algorithms created by other users on the platform. These are called "Feeds".

Another feature is that individual users have a lot of control over what sort of posts they see, and who sees their posts. Blocks on Bluesky are incredibly powerful, and incredibly normalized. There's no concept of a block of being a sign of "defeat". It's just about selecting what sort of people you allow to bother you. If you block someone, not only do you never see their posts again, but if you block someone, nobody that follows you can see what they posted in a thread you are both in. Because there's a network effect on blocking, if you're an incendiary poster, you will be blocked by a lot of people, and therefore your visibility will be lower. You can create lists of people to follow, where pushing a button follows every account on the list. You can create lists of people to block, where pushing a button blocks every account on the list. In this way, if you find a trusted user who makes these lists, you can add a lot of like minded accounts very quickly!

What Is Bluesky Mahjong?

Bluesky Mahjong is an algo that i made in 2023 to catch all mahjong related posts on the site. I have been pretty open about how I feel about the constant deterioration of Twitter. I have been tweaking and refining this algo, and recently I have come up with multiple feeds, to catch a variety of posts!First there is the main feed. Currently it's english-centric, but as jpn users start flocking to bluesky, mahjong related accounts might start migrating as well (there are several mahjong related bluesky accounts from professional players, but they have not returned to post in some time.)

Then, there is the M League feed.Mリーグフィードは、Mリーグの選手やチームに関連するハッシュタグを特に探します。日本語のみを検索対象とし、主に日本人ユーザーが利用するアカウントです。

Finally, I have the jpn only mahjong feed. このフィードは最初のフィードと同じですが、英語のキーワードを検索対象から除外し、日本語の立直麻雀関連投稿の検出比率を大幅に高めるように設計されています。

This might not surprise many, but I also made FGCSKY, which is an algorithm that searches for a lot of fighting game related posts on the site.

By using custom feeds, I really find the people and the posts that I want to be seeing when I go on social media. Without the feeling of people who treat social media like it's their job, or like it's a game that can be won, I feel like i've had high quality conversations, like the kind I used to have on older social media. Consider giving it a try!
